The City of Petaluma is proud to announce the 5th Street Bike Boulevard, a throughfare dedicated to providing safe passage for bicyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles. The Bike Boulevard will place an emphasis on bicycle and pedestrian safety, creating an easy and efficient option for Petalumans to get around town without the use of a car.
As a City, we are committed to making our streets safer for all who travel them. In April 2020, the City of Petaluma launched a pilot program called Slow Streets designed to provide safer passage for pedestrians and bicyclists. As a result of the Slow Streets program, we heard from over 500 community members who wanted to see traffic calming measures implemented all over town. Because of the low volume of traffic on 5th Steet, there should be little effect on those currently living on the street. The result of this project will be slower speeds overall, making it a more pleasant neighborhood street. We are not removing parking except at street corners to provide more visibility for pedestrians crossing the roadway.
The 5th Street Bike Boulevard is the latest project in our efforts to calm traffic and create safer streets. This project, and our other upcoming initiatives increase safety and support our citywide goal of becoming carbon neutral by the year 2030 by inspiring people to move in a way that is less dependent on fossil fuels.
As we move forward with projects like this one, we will look to you, our community, for input on what you feel is the best fit for your neighborhood. Please stay tuned for opportunities to share your thoughts and concerns with us. We look forward to working with you to make our streets the best they can be!
