Water Meter Technology Upgrade
Petaluma is upgrading our water meter technology to help us, and you, save water. Water meters upgrades are currently underway throughout town and will continue through the coming months. Our contractor, Professional Meters, Inc. (PMI), is installing the upgrades.
The new technology, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI):
- Shows your water use in real time through the online Eye on Water portal (data available to view 30 days after AMI installation)
- Alerts you to water leaks
- Helps you to identify water use trends
How it works
The new technology, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), transmits water use data remotely to the City and to the online Eye on Water portal. The data will help us, and you, track water use trends and find new ways to conserve.
If your meter has been upgraded, you should have received a door hanger with instructions to set up your free EyeOnWater account. Haven’t received one yet? Upgrades are still in progress! Once your upgrade is complete, you can access the website, but please note it may take up to 30 days for your account to display water usage data. As of March 2025, we’ve upgraded over 70% of our Petaluma water customer’s meters and expect to upgrade all meters by July 2025.

Please be aware that after the meter upgrade, you may notice a one-time oddity on your bill regarding your bill date range and consumption summary. This is due to the transition between the old and new meter systems and is a limitation of our bill print. However, your total water consumption and monthly charges will remain accurate and will encompass both the old and new meter reads and consumption.
