See Issues Around Town? Report via the engagEPetaluma App!

At the City of Petaluma, we are proud to have dedicated staff who work hard every day to keep our community safe, clean, and running smoothly. From filling potholes to maintaining parks and responding to safety concerns, our teams are committed to providing excellent service throughout the city.

While our crews are always on the job, we know that an extra set of eyes can make a big difference. That’s why we created the engagEPetaluma app — a simple, powerful tool that allows community members to report non-emergency issues like graffiti, sidewalk damage, streetlight outages, illegal dumping, and more.

When you report an issue through the app, you’re helping our teams respond more efficiently and effectively. We’re grateful to everyone who uses engagEPetaluma to let us know when something needs attention. Your partnership helps us do our jobs even better.

Download the engagEPetaluma app today and join us in keeping Petaluma a place we’re all proud to call home!

You can also report an issue through our City website HERE, via email at [email protected], or by phone at 707-778-4303. Please provide as much information as possible to help us identify and address the issue.

Everything reported through these tools is funneled through our Public Works administrative team, who make sure the issue goes to the right department for resolution.

Petaluma Transit Welcomes Its First-Ever Zero-Emission Bus

Big news from Petaluma Transit! We just welcomed our first-ever zero-emission bus—a major milestone in our journey toward a 100% clean fleet by 2030. This 40-foot New Flyer Xcelsior battery-electric bus is the first of four arriving this year!

These new electric buses directly support Petaluma’s Blueprint for Climate Action and our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. By investing in clean, quiet, and efficient public transportation, we’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and making our city more climate resilient—for everyone.

Wrapping and operator training are underway, and we can’t wait to see these buses hit the streets soon. This is a proud step forward for our community and our planet.

June is Gun Safety Awareness Month

The City of Petaluma, the Petaluma Police Department, Petaluma City Schools, and the Petaluma chapter of Moms Demand Action have come together to raise awareness about responsible firearm storage and safety to keep our kids and community safe. Owning a firearm is a Constitutional right that comes with serious responsibilities. California law and local Petaluma regulations require safe gun storage, and luckily there are many secure options – from simple locks to high-tech safes – that keep firearms both safe and accessible when needed.

With school out for summer, kids will be visiting friends’ homes more often. It’s a perfect time to normalize the conversation around gun safety. Asking, “Are there any guns in the home, and are they securely stored?” is a simple, responsible question—never a judgment. Safe gun storage saves lives. Let’s protect our children and support each other in creating a safer community. For tips on secure storage and more information, CLICK HERE.

For more great safety tips, visit ProjectChildSafe.org. Need a free gun lock for your home or a place you visit often? Stop by the Petaluma Police Station (969 Petaluma Blvd. North) or City Hall (11 English St.). Just ask, and we’ll provide one – no questions asked.

Safe storage saves lives. Let’s protect our community together.

Invest in our History: Help Preserve the Petaluma Museum!

The Petaluma Museum Association (PMA) and the City of Petaluma are thrilled to announce that the City has made a leadership gift of $15,000 to the PMA’s Bridge the Gap fundraising campaign!

The PMA is raising $30,000 to overcome the loss of three anticipated federally-funded grants. The shortfall is due to cuts the current presidential administration has made to two museum-supporting agencies, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Endowment for Humanities.

The PMA has operated the Petaluma Historical Library & Museum in close partnership with the City of Petaluma for nearly 50 years. The beloved museum—the historic heart of Petaluma—has been in an exciting period of growth for the past two years. The PMA leadership team has facilitated progress and brought operations in line with nonprofit best practices. They have:

  • Strengthened and stabilized operations and thoughtfully improved storytelling and visitor experiences;
  • Presented exhibits that uplift the stories of women, immigrants, and people of color;
  • Forged new community collaborations to build a deeper understanding, sensitivity, and respect for the needs of all Petalumans;
  • Launched new educational initiatives, offering more school visits and piloting programs that interest young people in history, including youth service-learning opportunities.

Funds raised through the Bridge the Gap campaign are tax deductible and will provide operating support for the Museum’s mission to preserve the unique history of Petaluma and provide educational and cultural services to the community. Learn more about the campaign and make your donation to preserve Petaluma’s history today at the website HERE!

Protecting Petaluma’s Trees: A New Tree Ordinance is on the Way

Trees are an essential part of what makes Petaluma a vibrant, healthy, and beautiful place to live. Beyond their scenic charm, trees provide powerful environmental and community benefits. They cool our streets, clean our air, support wildlife, reduce stormwater runoff, and help combat climate change. Shaded sidewalks and green spaces also encourage walkability and support our mental and physical well-being.

In recent years, Petaluma residents have voiced a strong desire to protect and enhance our city’s tree canopy. In response to this growing community interest, the City Council prioritized development of an Urban Forest Management Plan and update to Petaluma’s Tree Ordinance.  Both of these important action items are also included in the City’s recently adopted Blueprint for Climate Action, and will guide long-term tree care, planting, and preservation through data-driven and community informed strategies. These implementations will help ensure our urban forest continues to thrive and contribute to a healthier, more climate-resilient city.

City staff, with input from the Tree Advisory Committee and community groups like Petaluma ReLeaf, are currently drafting the updated tree preservation ordinance. It will include clear guidelines for preserving trees on both public and private property while promoting long-term canopy health.

A public draft will be posted soon—and we want your feedback! Visit cityofpetaluma.org/treeordinance to learn more, stay updated, and find out how you can help shape the future of Petaluma’s trees.

D Street Fire Station Renovation Begins This Winter

Our historic D Street Fire Station, built in 1938, will undergo major upgrades this winter to improve safety and preserve its character. Renovations include seismic retrofitting, asbestos and lead removal, and updates to dorms and restrooms — all while maintaining the station’s iconic look, including the brass pole and bell tower.

Two 1970s-era apparatus bays will be transformed into a public display space for the City’s vintage 1937 American LaFrance Fire Engine, viewable from D Street when not in parades.

To ensure uninterrupted emergency service, fire and EMS crews will temporarily operate from a new interim station at 307 Petaluma Blvd South. Construction is expected to take 12 months.

To learn more about the project, read Fire Chief Jeff Schach’s letter to the community at the link HERE

This vital project is funded by Petaluma’s Measure U and Sonoma County’s Measure H, supporting stronger local fire protection and disaster response. We appreciate the community’s patience as we improve our facilities to maintain public safety!
