As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19, and in response to the recent directives from the Governor, the City of Petaluma is shifting to an “essential services only” operations model beginning Tuesday, March 17, and continuing through April 6, 2020.

Under this model, the City will focus on delivering “mission-essential services,” i.e., those related to functions that directly impact the life safety of the public and/or City staff; and those related to statutes, laws, executive orders, or directives that charge the organization with mandatory responsibilities.

All public-facing City facilities (including City Hall and the Petaluma Community Center) will be closed to the public beginning at the close of business on March 16 through April 6.

Contact information and service availability for City departments can be found at the end of this news post.

The decision to adopt an “essential services only” model of operation follows the guidance announced by Governor Newsom on Sunday, March 15—with the ultimate goal to reduce transmission of the Coronavirus within the community, especially among staff and members of the public who would otherwise be interacting in-person.

“We take our responsibilities as a full-service City very seriously. Right now, that means prioritizing the services that are essential to the health and safety of our staff and community—such as responding to emergency calls, keeping our water and wastewater facilities operating, and maintaining our State and Federal obligations,” explains Peggy Flynn, City Manager.

“As Federal, State, and County guidance changes, we will continue to adjust to the situation. Please know that despite operating under this model, City staff are working to ensure continuity of City services as much as we can under these limiting circumstances. We ask that during this time, when in-person interaction is limited, please do what Petalumans do best and continue to check in on your neighbors in other ways such as by phone or email.”

City first responders are on the job prioritizing the health and safety of the community. To help limit the spread of coronavirus, we encourage the public to utilize our online police reporting services at or call the 24/7 police non-emergency line at (707) 778-4372. In the event of an emergency, dial 9-1-1 for assistance.

If your report or emergency requires in-person police or fire response, please know that under certain circumstances and to comply with social distancing recommendations, our staff may request you exit your residence during the interaction. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we care for the community under the current conditions.

The City of Petaluma is working hard to keep our community safe and informed during these uncertain times. Thank you for your continued support.
