Community parks serve a citywide population and typically include major recreational amenities such as lighted sports fields, sports courts, swimming pools, recreation buildings, and other similar special-use facilities, as well as restrooms and parking lots.

Pocket parks are small spaces (often less than one acre) across the City. They serve localized areas and provide small-scale amenities such as benches or drinking fountains.

Neighborhood parks generally serve a smaller geographic area, within walking and biking distance from residences. They may include amenities, such as children’s playgrounds, ball fields, open lawn areas, and picnic tables, but are typically not designed to accommodate organized recreational activities.

In 2012, Petaluma acquired 11 acres of open space on Paula Lane at Sunset Drive, aiming to preserve it for community enjoyment.

Open Space Areas such as Shollenberger Park, Lafferty Ranch and the upcoming Paula Lane Nature Preserve offer more relaxed park experiences.  These areas are designed for passive recreation, education, and habitat preservation/restoration.  Put away the soccer cleats and lace up your hiking boots or walking shoes for adventure in these parks.
