Separation from Employment
Separation of Employment is when you leave the City of Petaluma Employment for reasons other than retirement.
Resignation
Resignation is the voluntary separation of an employee from the City of Petaluma. It is your responsibility to provide Witten notice to your immediate supervisor at least 10 calendar days prior to your last day as a city employee.
Involuntary Separation
Involuntary Separations are classified as: dismissal, disqualification, lay-off, unsuccessful completion of employment probation or death.
Separation/Termination Process
You are responsible for returning all City property to your manager including your ID Badge.
Human Resources may reach out to schedule an exit interview with you, it is totally voluntary if you wish to participate.
Leaves and Final Paycheck
You will continue to receive your salary through your last day of employment. Your accrued leaves will be paid out following your Units’ MOU. Your final paycheck will be paid following the City of Petaluma's Schedule of Pay Periods.
Medical Benefits
Your medical coverage ends the last day of the following month after you separate. For example; if you resign effective February 3rd your medical benefits will end March 31st.
Dental and Vision Benefits
Your Dental and Vision Benefits end on the last day of the month you have resigned. For example, if you resign February 3rd your dental and vision benefits will end on February 28th or 29th.
Cobra
You may be eligible to participate in Cobra for medical, dental, vision and EAP benefits. You will receive a letter in the mail from Human Resources outlining your benefits and costs. Cobra lasts for 18 months from your separation/termination date.
Unemployment
You may be eligible for unemployment. The Unemployment Insurance (UI) program pays benefits to workers who have lost their job and meet the program’s eligibility requirements.
If you have become unemployed or partially unemployed, you may file a UI claim. After you have filed a claim, you must continue to certify for benefits and meet eligibility requirements each week in order to receive benefit payments.
