Alman Marsh
Alman Marsh is 80 acres of pasture/marsh that sits between Shollenberger Park and the Petaluma Marina. It's home to a multitude of wildlife, including several threatened/endangered species.
The city bought this land in the 1980s, breached the 80-90 years-old river levee in a couple of places to allow marshland to rebuild and opened the land as a special part of Shollenberger Park in 2000 – 2002. Alman Marsh allows space for tidal waters from the Petaluma River to spread over marshland providing natural flood management. It is now a mix of brackish tidal wetlands, fed daily by the river, and degraded pasture uplands containing seasonal freshwater wetlands. Alman Marsh is a special, biologically sensitive place as it is home to several threatened and endangered species.
The best place to enter Alman Marsh is from the Petaluma Marina trailhead. To learn more about Alman Marsh's unique ecosystem and what is being done to preserve it, visit the Petaluma Wetlands's Alliance website.
