"NAGA" ASSEMBLY IN PROGRESS

Artist, Cjay Roughgarden, assembling "Naga"

"Naga" Illuminated at Burning Man
Project Summary
The Petaluma Fairgrounds welcomed “Naga" from December 2024 through April 2025. The majestic sea serpent was on display to the public and hosted many community events including story time with the Petaluma Library, a sound bath, photography groups and many picnics.
Naga is the vision of Oakland artists Cjay Roughgarden, who created the sculpture with inspiration from her favorite childhood book “Cyrus, the Unsinkable Sea Serpent.
Roughgarden collaborated with fellow artists Stephanie Shipman and Jackie Scott to create “Naga and the Captainess” for Burning Man 2024. The work was selected for a well-deserved 2024 Burning Man Honorarium Award. The trio of artists, along with 150 volunteers brought a story to life that wowed guests from near and far.
Naga Facts:
- The head stands at 22’ and their tail at 24’!
- Naga is illuminated and magical both day and night.
- There are 4,000 hand fabricated scales coating Naga.
- Naga can blow bubbles!
As “Naga” continues on his journey to Golden Gate Park- San Francisco, we are grateful to have shared the experience of temporarily being home to the magnificent 100+ foot-long sculpture.
