Shollenberger Ampitheater & Kiosk Improvements

Project Description

The Shollenberger Ampitheater & Kiosk Improvements project will construct an outdoor amphitheater at Shollenberger Park, creating an accessible venue for environmental education classes, lectures, and demonstrations focused on wetland and marsh habitats. The amphitheater will serve K-12 students and the broader community, supporting educational initiatives and public engagement.

The project will improve the gravel pathway leading to a new amphitheater stage. The stage will be a low-profile, ground-level concrete platform with a decorative finish that mimics natural rock, designed to blend seamlessly into the park’s landscape. It won’t be a large or imposing structure but rather a simple, durable space for performances and community events. The amphitheater will also include seating with coated metal mesh benches.

Additionally, the project will replace the aging split rail fence, which has deteriorated over time, and install an informational sign near the confluence of Adobe Creek and the Petaluma River.

BIRD NESTING PROTECTION MEASURES

Efforts will be made to minimize impacts on wildlife during construction, which will occur during the bird nesting season. A bird nesting survey was conducted in late January 2025, during which a biologist delineated a mowing area within the project footprint and established a buffer to discourage nesting in those areas. Prior to construction, a follow-up nesting bird survey will be conducted. Biological oversight will be provided during key construction activities, particularly in marked environmentally sensitive areas. If work continues during the nesting season, weekly inspections will be conducted to monitor potential impacts and ensure that nesting bird species are not endangered.

COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNER ENGAGEMENT

Throughout this project, we have collaborated with the Petaluma Wetlands Alliance (PWA) and Petaluma’s Recreation, Music & Parks Commission (RMPC) to gather community feedback and keep them informed, including through public engagement meetings.
