F & 1st Street Bridge Replacement

Project Description

Heads up, Petaluma! The wood bridge over Thompson Creek, located at the intersection of First and F Street, will be closed to vehicle traffic immediately to address structural issues. The bridge will remain closed for approximately 8 months while we construct a replacement bridge. Detours will be in place to route vehicles around the closure.

The road closure and detour (see photo) will limit the section of First Street between E Street and F Street to local access only. Four parking spaces will be eliminated on First Street closest to the bridge to accommodate a vehicle turn around for local traffic. Vehicle movements will be limited at the intersection of First Street and F Street to limit left turns only off northbound First Street onto F Street, right only off F Street onto First Street, and one way traffic control off First Street onto F Street. Detours will be in place to route vehicles around the closure.

This project will replace the F & 1st Street Bridge. With elements dating back to the early 1900’s, the existing timber framed rail bridge is a piece of Petaluma history. Initially a railroad bridge, it has been incorporated into the street and carries pedestrian, bicycle, automobile, and truck traffic. Replacing the bridge will provide a safer, stronger solution for traffic.

The bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning December 16, 2021 to address structural issues. The bridge will remain closed for approximately 8 months while we construct a replacement bridge. Detours will be in place to route vehicles around the closure.

Project Location

F & 1st Street

Traffic Impacts & Benefits

The road closure and detour will limit the section of First Street between E Street and F Street to local access only. Four parking spaces will be eliminated on First Street closest to the bridge to accommodate a vehicle turn around for local traffic. During construction the intersection at 1st and F Street will be closed to through traffic. Detours will be in place to route vehicles around the closure.

Please see the Traffic Control Plan for additional details regarding the closure and detour routes.

Project Status

Construction is expected to begin on June 15, 2022. During construction, heavy machinery will be onsite to install pile foundations for the new bridge; therefore, access to the area will be limited. Construction is scheduled to be completed in early November 2022.

Funding

The project is being funded by Street Maintenance funds.
