F & 1st Street Bridge Replacement

Project Description

In December of 2021, the wood bridge located at the intersection of First and F Streets was closed to vehicle traffic to address structural issues. Since then, our team, in partnership with our contractor Ghilotti Brothers, Inc., has been hard at work replacing the bridge so that it meets modern design standards and safety requirements. Replacing the bridge will provide a safer, stronger solution for traffic. Detours are in place to route vehicles around the closure.

In addition to replacing the bridge, we are adding enhanced safety and accessibility features to the area including:

  • Improved, ADA-compliant connectivity, safety, and access over the bridge for bicyclists, pedestrians, and those using motorized carts
  • New sidewalks in surrounding stretches of road that did not previously have them

Project Update

Replacing a bridge is a multi-phased process that is designed to ensure safety and structural integrity. We take this work and the safety of our community very seriously and adhere to strict safety standards every step of the way.

Due to the need for additional testing to ensure design and safety criteria were met, the noisiest portion of our bridge work ended up taking longer than expected. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or discomfort this has caused to those living and working in the area. We appreciate the patience and understanding of the neighborhood as we complete the project.

We have 2 extended days of noise ahead as we wrap up some required permitting work for the project. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we complete the new bridge.

Please expect extended noise and vibration the following days/times:

Friday, November 4, 7 AM - 6 PM
Saturday, November 5, 8 AM - 7 PM

We are on-track to finish the full project and open the bridge by the end of November 2022. In addition to the new bridge, we have added enhanced safety and accessibility features for pedestrians and bicycles. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to complete this important project.

Bridge History

With elements dating back to the early 1900s, the existing timber framed rail bridge is a piece of Petaluma history. Initially a railroad bridge, it has been incorporated into the street and carries pedestrian, bicycle, automobile, and truck traffic.

Project Location

F & 1st Street

Traffic Impacts & Benefits

The road closure and detour will limit the section of First Street between E Street and F Street to local access only. Four parking spaces will be eliminated on First Street closest to the bridge to accommodate a vehicle turn around for local traffic. During construction the intersection at 1st and F Street will be closed to through traffic. Detours will be in place to route vehicles around the closure.

Please see the Traffic Control Plan for additional details regarding the closure and detour routes.

Project Status

Construction is expected to begin on June 15, 2022. During construction, heavy machinery will be onsite to install pile foundations for the new bridge; therefore, access to the area will be limited. Construction is scheduled to be completed in early November 2022.

Funding

The project is being funded by Street Maintenance funds.
