Temporary Fire Station

Project Description

The City of Petaluma is establishing a temporary fire station at 307 Petaluma Blvd South to maintain essential emergency services during the renovation of Fire Station 1. This facility will serve as the operational hub for Petaluma's downtown fire services throughout the 12-month construction period at the D Street location. The temporary station has been strategically selected for its central location, ensuring that emergency response times continue to meet community needs without interruption. The temporary facility will be fully equipped to support all necessary fire and emergency operations, including housing a fire engine, ambulance, as well as providing suitable living and working quarters for fire personnel. Modifications to the building include installation of temporary vehicle bays, communications systems, and living quarters to ensure our firefighters can maintain their high level of service to the community.

All essential equipment from Fire Station 1 will be relocated to this temporary facility, and the site has been configured to allow for quick emergency vehicle deployment. The City has worked closely with the Fire Department to ensure the temporary facility meets all operational requirements while maintaining efficient response times throughout the downtown area.

We anticipate the relocation to begin approximately one month before construction starts at Fire Station 1 (estimated to begin in fall 2025), allowing for a smooth transition with no gaps in emergency service coverage. The temporary station will remain operational until the completion of renovations at Fire Station 1, at which time operations will return to the renovated and modernized facility on D Street.

The City is committed to maintaining the same high level of emergency services that our community expects and deserves during this transition period.

Project Location

307 Petaluma Blvd South

Traffic Impacts/Benefits

The temporary station will have minimal impacts to traffic during the setup and construction phase. Once operational, fire apparatus will exit onto Petaluma Blvd South when responding to emergency calls and will re-enter the facility via 2nd Street upon return. This one-way traffic flow for emergency vehicles has been designed to maximize safety and efficiency.

Timeline/Project Status

The temporary station is scheduled to be operational by late summer 2025, approximately one month before construction begins at Fire Station 1. It will remain in service for approximately 12-13 months until renovations at the D Street location are complete.

Funding

This temporary relocation project is a component of the larger Fire Station 1 renovation and is funded through the same sources: Measure U, Measure H, and impact fees, as outlined in the 2023 Public Safety Facility Master Plan.
