Water Transmission Pipeline Impressed Cathodic System Upgrade

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The City of Petaluma is committed to providing clean and safe water to our community. As part of our work to provide the most reliable service possible, we will be installing a new cathodic protection system on the water transmission pipeline under the Petaluma River to ensure safety and security for years to come.

What are we doing?

We are installing cathodic protection on the existing potable water transmission pipeline that runs underneath the Petaluma River near Petaluma Blvd S and Landing Way. This water main pipe section in this location primarily consists of aging, 34-year-old, steel pipes. We are providing the pipe with cathodic protection to ensure the pipe remains in working condition and to lower future maintenance costs. This upgrade will extend the life of the existing pipeline.

What is Cathodic Protection?

Cathodic protection is a technique used to control corrosion of something metallic, such as a metal pipe, by burying something metallic (a “sacrificial anode”) next to the pipe. The anode will corrode (break down) first to protect the pipe.
